Starting a Diet
di·et ˈdī-ət. : food and drink regularly provided or consumed. a diet of fruits and vegetables. a vegetarian diet. : habitual nourishment.
Looking at the meaning of the word diet it is safe to conclude that a diet is no more than what we eat and drink on a daily basis. Whether a person's goal is to increase the muscle mass or lose weight or gain weight, each person will have a specific diet in order to achieve his goal.
But even for someone who doesn't have a specific goal to achieve with his diet it is still important to have a well balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of diseases such as high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes etc.
That being said it is wrong to assume that just because we are happy with our body weight we can ignore the power of a well balanced and healthy diet and in order for us not to do that it is essential for us to go through a nutritional education.
So what is a nutritional education?
We all have a few eating habits that can end up undermining our health. Never has it been so useful to have a ability to distinguish between bad and good eating habits! There is a very easy access to processed foods and we have a very sedentary lifestyle so the role of a specialist is to help us ditch these bad habits.
I believe that quiting bad eating habits progressively is way better than trying to quit them overnight, not only it causes less shock but it also gives more time for the body and mind to adapt. It is said that the human being needs around 21 days to develop a habit so why not try to replace our old bad eating habits with some new good eating habits every 21 days.
When should you start a diet ?
Well now for the million dollars question, when should we start our diet? Most people think of a specific day. The first day of the year is filled with people who say that they'll change their diet, and actually manage to do so but only for a short amount of time. Some people think of starting a diet the next time they go grocery shopping because only then they'll have healthier food at home. In life there will neve be a better moment than the present to develop a new habit such as a healthier diet and lifestyle. It would surely be nicer to have healthier food at home but since we don't have them we can still cook or use them in a healthier way. For example we can grill them instead of frying them and we can diversify our diet using the variety of food available at home and progressively improve our habits. So the best moment to start a diet is now and then step by step we will improve our eating habits.
